Current and Proposed Projects

By leveraging Nelson’s intellectual capital community, by undertaking capacity-building initiatives which grow that community, and through the creation of more high-paying intellectual capital jobs as we build more infrastructure and consensus to grow this aspect of our wider community, WICK will actively drive larger initiatives and smaller projects that serve this wider community that create a more prosperous, equitable and sustainable economy/society.

Specifically, we seek to advance initiatives like:

  • Establishing a branch campus of a major university in Nelson
  • Establishing a Medical Innovation Precinct in Nelson
  • Advocating for the 1000-employee Science & Technology Precinct in Nelson
  • Supporting the reinvigoration of the historic Nelson Scientific, Literary & Philosophic Institute
  • Building the profile of our 10 Concentrated IC Economies
  • Championing 1% For The Arts campaign with local businesses and governmental entities
  • Supporting a stewardship role for the Te Tauihu Intergenerational Strategy Mātauranga outcome
  • Enhanced Capital Flows initiative
  • Advocating for CBD density and vertical housing options
  • Brokering youth mentorships in IC community and overall IC capacity building for youth
  • Advocating for a NMIT/Te Pūkenga IC & Tech Hub

  • Support the establishment of the Nelson AI Sandbox

We also seek to support smaller projects like hackathons, Techstarter events and career events to connect young people with local businesses.
